A Difficult Problem
Our global community faces significant challenges. The loss of biodiversity and the impacts of climate change are affecting people and ecosystems worldwide. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent, pandemics more likely, extreme weather more severe, and species increasingly at risk of extinction. Unsustainable practices in agriculture, mining, and energy production continue to drive deforestation, pollution, and the overuse of natural resources.
Healthy ecosystems are essential to human health and well-being. In response to these challenges, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established. Yet, the global funding gap for nature conservation remains vast—estimated at over USD 700 billion annually.
This gap cannot be closed by governments and philanthropy alone. Conservation experts and asset managers have suggested that the private sector could help bridge more than half of this shortfall by building profitable businesses that deliver positive environmental outcomes.
Integrating nature-based solutions and sustainable practices into core operations can strengthen the business case. To develop commercially viable conservation impact projects, we must collaborate with businesses, financial institutions, and local stakeholders. By doing so, we can reduce pressure on ecosystems, build resilience for communities and nature, and generate meaningful financial returns for investors and local economies.
