“Objectives and principles for successful management and conservation of coral reefs and other tropical marine ecosystems”

After decades of research and conservation effort around the world, we have learned a great deal about what works, and what doesn’t, in protecting coral reefs and other tropical marine ecosystems.

We’re pleased to share a new publication by our Scientific Advisor on Marine Ecosystems and Coral Reef Resilience, Professor Laurence McCook. Drawing on decades of scientific research, management experience, and lessons from conservation initiatives worldwide, the paper synthesizes the key elements of successful marine conservation into a practical and integrated framework.

The publication identifies five objectives and twelve principles that underpin effective management and conservation of tropical marine ecosystems. Rather than focusing on individual threats, projects, or interventions in isolation, the framework emphasizes the importance of addressing ecological, social, governance, and economic considerations as part of a connected system.

Designed as a practical guide for managers, practitioners, governments, NGOs, and communities, the paper offers a structured approach to assessing conservation strategies and identifying the components needed to achieve lasting outcomes.

This publication reflects the systems-based thinking that informs our work at Seneca. Successful conservation rarely depends on a single intervention. It requires aligning science, governance, finance, and stakeholder engagement in ways that can deliver meaningful and enduring results.
