Welcoming NaturLoop to the Seneca Office

Having first met Charmaine Cu-Unjieng, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of NaturLoop, in Manila just a week earlier, the Seneca team was pleased to welcome her to our Hong Kong office this past Monday and continue the conversation over coffee. NaturLoop is tackling a fascinating challenge: transforming coconut waste into sustainable building materials that can reduce pressure on forest resources while creating additional value for coconut farming communities. By collecting and upcycling coconut waste that is often discarded or underutilized in coconut-growing regions of the Philippines, the company is helping convert an agricultural by-product into a commercially valuable and sustainable construction material.

Beyond creating sustainable building materials, NaturLoop is helping turn what is often treated as a waste management problem into an economic opportunity. By creating value for coconut residues that might otherwise be discarded or burned, the company has the potential to reduce open burning, improve air quality, and lessen the public health impacts associated with smoke and particulate pollution in agricultural communities.

During the visit, we discussed the growing demand for sustainable construction materials, circular economy opportunities across Southeast Asia, and the challenges of bringing innovative climate and nature solutions to commercial scale. NaturLoop’s flagship product, Cocoboard®, is a 100% bio-based panel manufactured from coconut waste and designed as an alternative to conventional wood-based materials used in furniture and interior applications.

What makes NaturLoop particularly interesting is its ability to address multiple challenges through a single business model. By upcycling coconut waste into high-value building materials, the company aims to reduce dependence on wood-based products, create additional income opportunities for coconut farmers, and support more sustainable supply chains within the construction and furniture sectors.

NaturLoop is currently preparing for commercial scale-up in Europe and Thailand while exploring future growth opportunities in the Philippines and other markets. It was a pleasure hosting Charmaine Cu-Unjieng and learning more about the company’s ambitions and progress. We look forward to staying connected and following NaturLoop’s continued growth in the sustainable materials sector.
